Respect
Her voice changed everything

‘Respect’ is an upcoming American biographical musical drama following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom that gave her the title the Queen of Soul. It is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.

American singer Jennifer Hudson takes the honorary opportunity to portray Franklin, as handpicked by the icon herself. The rest of the cast are Skye Dakota Turner as young Aretha Franklin, Forest Whitaker as C. L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Audra McDonald as Barbara Siggers Franklin, Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington, and many other talented actors-singers.

This will be the third time Hudson and Whitaker acted as daughter and father, as they previously played in ‘Winged Creatures’ (2008) and ‘Black Nativity’ (2013). Other than that, Hudson and McDonald have experience working for the ‘Dreamgirls’ musical, where the former played Effie on the big screen and the latter played Deena in its staged concert.
