Mary Anning

‘Mary Anning and the Dinosaur Hunters’ depicts the life, plight, and love of prominent fossil hunter Mary Anning (Katherine Hamilton), who navigated her profession and studies in a male-dominated society at a period when women's research was generally ignored or plagiarised by males.

Anning found the first complete ichthyosaur skeleton when she was just 12 years old, and she spent the rest of her life hunting for fossils that changed human perceptions of ancient life and natural history.

Unfortunately, since she was a woman, she was seldom given credit for her important findings. Her contributions have only recently been recognised, despite the fact that Charles Darwin's Origin of Species was heavily inspired by her work.

The filmmaker, Sharon Sheehan, was inspired by Mary Anning's life. She used to go fossil hunting with her family as a kid, and she instilled the habit in her children by taking them to the shore in Lyme Regis, where her film is set.
